Since January 6th I have attempted to compose my thoughts at least nine different times, but each attempt stalled by the overwhelming largesse of emotion and thoughts — most rationale, some not. One aspect in which I find both pride and personal satisfaction is the ability to articulate complexities through writing, so this added an additional layer of frustration.

Sometimes, we must allow someone else to be our voice; to express our heart. That someone for me was Ms. Amanda Gorman, poet laureate, who recited her poem at the Inauguration of President Biden and Vice President Harris. In a moment of personal victory, embracing the struggle for humility over the ease of embracing pride, I was able to give myself permission to allow this young, empath’s rhythms, cadences and dancing of words speak for me and express my heart. I was, and am able to take a breath of peace, allow myself to feel the depths of feelings I failed to articulate, wipe the tear from my eye, nod my head in affirmation and say, “Yes. Yes. What she said.”
If you haven’t yet heard this paradoxically prophetical and pastoral call to our culture, then I commend you to do so now.
I’ve provided the link. Put in your earbuds or put on your headset. Sit in a comfortable seat. Close your eyes. Let her be your voice and express your heart.
